Project 1: Elements of Art Viz Notes
Students learn about Viz Notes (visual note-taking) that combines visual images, graphs, diagrams in combination with note-taking. Attention is paid to emphasizing important text with though to typographical design. Project 2: Value Study of an Eye
We're kicking off the value portrait drawing by breaking up the face by facial features starting with a value study of an eye. The following projects will be explored to build drawing and visual perception skills, understanding and applying values and blending techniques, and learning about the features of the face. Directions: Follow the guide, teacher demonstrations, and video below to draw a detailed value eye on a 9x6" drawing paper. Use a tortillon blending tool (otherwise known as a smudge stick) to smooth out and create seamless value blending. If you don't have a tortillon you can easily make a fun blending tool just by making a paper football! Use the corners and edges of the paper football to blend, smudge, smear, and push your values around your drawing. Follow this video: Start blending!!

|
Or, the this video (to the right) shows you how to make an even better tortillon (other than the easy old paper football above)!! The tortillon you make from the video below has a very fine point that allows you to get into small detailed spaces and have greater control over how you blend and use values in your drawing. Try it!!

Project 5: Proportion & Placement of Facial Features
Now we are going to learn proper proportion and placement of facial features in order to draw a portrait accurately. We will also gain an understanding about the plans of the face to find where and how values fall on a face.

Project 6: GRID PORTRAIT with VALUE
8th grade is completing their grid portrait project. Student studied how to draw facial feature with value and learned proportion and placement of facial features. They chose a person to study and used a grid transfer technique to draw a portrait of their person using values. (Image to the left was demonstrated and drawn by Ms. Prindle) |
